Beach Safety

Sun and heat are the real risk on a long game day. Drink water before you are thirsty, take shade breaks, wear a hat and reapply sunscreen after sweating or swimming. Stop playing if you feel dizzy, overheated or short of breath, and take extra care in the middle of the day.

Give every game room. Hard paddle balls, bocce balls, cornhole bags and diving roundnet players can injure someone who wanders through, so set up away from towels, toddlers and swimmers, and keep a clear zone around the play area. Bocce balls are heavy: roll them, never throw them toward people.

Soft sand is easy on falls but hard on ankles, knees and Achilles tendons. Warm up, play on flat packed sand near the water line when you can, and match the pace to the oldest and youngest players. Anyone with heart, joint or balance concerns should check with their doctor before taking up a new active game.

Anchor nets, poles and umbrellas securely. A gust can lift an unsecured umbrella or tip a net pole into someone. Take every piece of equipment home with you, including stakes and small parts, so nothing is left buried in the sand.
